Jenny + A Bakers Dozen = Berlin, Germany

(View from the train on my way from Frankfurt to Berlin)

We were both 16 when Jenny flew over the pond to live in my village for a year. After visiting her home country, uh more specifically, her home city, I can’t even begin to imagine what she was thinking during her first week in Middleville. With the cows and the farms, and more cows. When Jenny first saw a picture of the beautiful home in the middle of the woods that she would be living in for a year in Michigan, she said it looked perfect. Her experience actually living with an American family was a bit different, but we won’t dwell on that. Because Jenny made lasting friendships.

One of them being me.

The last time I saw this face she was in Seoul for a two day layover on her way back from Australia… four years ago. This trip marked the third time in 13 years that I spent time with Jenny. In a world where everything changes in the blink of an eye, it’s a blessing when some things stay exactly the same… only maybe a bit better.

A ten minute bike ride from Jenny’s place and BOOM, we are at the Berlin wall… well what’s left of it in this part of the city.

I made Jenny hang out on that bridge for at least ten minutes to get a picture of a train coming (or going).

And then we got caught in the storm.

Yes. I was in Germany during the 2014 World Cup. Yes. I watched Germany crush Brazil. Yes. It was crazy.

Jenny actually felt really bad at the end of the game saying, “I hope Brazil gets at least one goal…” And then they did! Walking to the metro that night I witnessed people running in the streets, screaming and waving flags, hanging out of car windows, jumping in front of cars and giving high fives to drivers. It was insane.

From America, to Asia, to Europe… Until we meet again my friend. (Next time let’s go SOUTH!)
